Couta Photos

On the 18th & 19th of January Avalon Sailing Club hosted the Pittwater Couta Boat Regatta

The Couta Boat design originated as a fishing boat around Sorrento and Queenscliffe and as far west as Portland. At a time when the first boat back to port got the best price for it's catch, the Couta evolved into a fast sailor as well as having to be a good seakeeper in the often treacherous waters around Port Phillip and The Rip.

Eight beautiful examples of these boats lined up on the weekend of the 18th/19th of January for five races on a windward/leeward course. Saturday proved to be a day of moderate to fresh E to NE winds which sorted the fleet out. Sunday was a more moderate SE breeze.

One Avalon Sailing Club member owns the beautiful Couta "Cariad", taking pride of place on the mooring in front of the club.

Some crews return to the club on a Wednesday evening after the infamous Woody Point twilight for a BBQ on the ASC deck.

So if you don't know your bobstay from your bumpkin or want to know more about trimming a peak halyard, come down to the club on a Wednesday evening and say hello to this dedicated group sailing some classic boats.
