Quartet Bowl Race #5 Results

Last Sunday is was the Quartet Bowl Race #5. A total of eleven yachts participated.

It was a fast race. The race was handicapped for a ‘slowboat’ of 185 minutes. In the last ten races the median is 183 minutes and the mean 188 minutes. Goldfinder helmed by Jan Evans, previously known as the ‘slowboat’, was finished in 126 minutes! She was heard to be on her mooring and packed up, well before some of the ‘fast boats’ had even finished. Laura, helmed by Jonathon Knox, continued her strong recent performances with a well sailed 2nd place. Beau Soleil, helmed by Bob Batchelor, also had a strong showing to finish in third spot. Down the back of the field there was plenty of carnage.

Chaos Theory did a good job to recover from headsail problems that meant she couldn’t gybe. She had to sail past ‘J’ and then double back to round the mark. Bangalla blew her mainsheet at the taper. Her sails were seen flogging in the middle of the Hawkesbury until she could rig up a makeshift mainsheet. But, that was minor compared to the troubles on Pirihi. Her spinnaker halyard jammed at the top of the mast, her #2 was ripped apart and her main was torn! She tried to find some lee around the other side of Juno, where Steve Rubie was sent up to the top of the mast to pull down the spinnaker. Just to make it more difficult a big cruiser sped past with little regard to the man up the mast! Eventually all was sorted and Pirihi safely made her way home.

In terms of the series it is tight. After one drop, Goldfinger leads on 15 points (22 without the drop). Then it is Beau Soleil on 16; Chaos Theory on 18; Pirihi on 19; and then Laura on 20.

Sydney Harbour observations (Wedding Cake West) showed a breeze at 14-21kt with gusts of 18-24kt mainly from the NNE. It was similar on Pittwater and the Hawkesbury, with the wind mainly from the NE/ENE.
