Opening Day Race and Spiral Results

The 2018-19 season kicked off on Father’s Day with the Opening Day Race concurrent with Retriever Race #1. Seven yachts participated in the race. The Spirals were out in force, also with seven. This coming Sunday is the first of the Avalon Series. The early forecast is sunny and 20 degrees. Much better than the chilly conditions on Sunday gone. We welcomed two new entrants, Bruce Potts on Countessa, a Northshore 38; and Brett Hodder (and Tina) on Location, a Seawind Catamaran.

It was a good steady breeze, enough to shake off the winter cobwebs (and some of the foul on the bottoms of boats). Wimmera, helmed by Glenn Barnes, got off to a clean start out on the right side and now has fist mark bragging rights for the rest of the season. Her spinnaker work was excellent, with the course demanding a number of gybes. While there were pockets of lifts on offer, mainly on the left on the leg back up to Tp, the breeze was pretty steady so it was mainly a matter of trimming for maximum speed. Bangalla chased hard on the upwind legs, but couldn’t gain ground. Wimmera won on scratch with Bangalla in 2nd place. Meanwhile, Goldfinger, helmed by Jan Evans, enjoyed the breeze on the reaching legs to keep a respectable distance from the leaders. She continued her strong form from 2017-18 to take out the handicap honours and the Opening Day Trophy. Well done to Jan and David. Countessa looked pretty quick around the course and she took out 2nd place on handicap.

In the Spirals, it was Pat Quinlan on Roo who handled the conditions the best, taking out both scratch and handicap honours. Simon Hill on Tantivy had a shocking start but worked his way up the field to take second place on scratch. Ian Turner on Merlin took out 2nd place on handicap.

Sydney Harbour observations (Wedding Cake West) showed a breeze at 16-18kt with gusts of 21-23kt steady from the S. It was similar on Pittwater.

The yachts raced the 11.1Nm course #10 – Tp, N, Tp, Rp, S, N
The Spirals also raced around the marks – Tp, T, S, N
