Yacht coordinator is responsible for yacht race details

  1. Make sure sign in sheet and pen is on shelf under notice board ( either Kingsley prints off website or Handicapper, John Siladi organises)
  2. Decide course in consultation with OOD. There is a list of courses in the main sheet.  This decision may be left until  30 minutes before the start if wind is uncertain  as long as K or O mark is not needed.  It is your decision, in consultation with yachties present and OOD whether to  abandon in strong winds or no wind.
  3. Organise to lay start line  (buoy and pin) and if necessary  K or O marks.  Use of boats and boat boys for this has to be coordinated with yacht coordinator and head boat boy. Normally K/O mark laid 10-30 -11 ish. Junior boat boys should not go out to O mark on their own so you may need to go with them.
  4. Check that the boat which is to be used as the Yacht start has all necessary flags including the recall,  postpone  shorten course abandon race flags.  (They often don’t and may need to be fetched from another boat.)
  5. By  11.45 Go out on start boat- Take sign on sheet and sign on any additional boats (They should sail past you on starboard tack and with luck hail you)  Display course number on a board on the back of boat
  6. For Retriever and BWS the start boat is usually Lucinda and you need to swap with morning crew. For Quartet Bowl Lucinda is usually not back from morning racing so likely to be Blue Peter – OOD will finalise
  7. Start Race  If wind drops (or fails to come in) you may need to shorten course
  8. Monitor radio transmissions so in rare cases if something goes wrong you may be in a position to help.
  9. Keep track of where boats are if possible so you are ready to finish when the first boat arrives back or shorten course if necessary
  10. Finish rates. Record finish times on sheet (usually a two person job one checking when yacht crosses line and one recording times so grab help from someone who is around.

Note you need to know the flags and sound signals for the start procedure and shorten course (in main sheet) and the use of flag signals for postpone, etc (in blue book sailing instructions)
