2010 Pittwater Regatta report Mar

Pittwater Regatta 27th~28th March 2010

F11Pic

Congratulations to all the sailors that joined in (results in this report below), this year we had a slightly different format and the weather ....

forecast for the afternoon was a buiding North Easterly. True to form, that's what happened peaking at between 15~18 knots. It had also been  decided to break with the Pittwater North Course tradition (for most boats) and run a single long race with some substantially longer legs.

A lead boat was provided to guide boats to the "distant" top mark. Reactions were "varied" as the competitors were advised that the top mark was at "Stokes Point", some loved it, others thought that we had just said New Zealand.

The Pittwater Regatta was run jointly by ASC, RPAYC, RMYC & BYRA and included yachts, one designs and dinghies hosted by different Clubs over the weekend. This report is on the Centreboard Classes run on Sunday afternoon.

The long course was for several reasons:

  • It gave our sailors a chance to taste some long works and the tactical strategies that are required with regard to wind shifts.
  • It also reflected some of the classes with their long championship courses and time of 1.5~ 2 hour target time for a single race. Only a few years ago, this is what everyone everwhere did!
  • Finally with just 1 race it also made working out the results easier, rather than pumping all the entries through a computer and holding up the presentation till the wee small hours of the next day.

With the different course size, I had calculated the course lengths for each class so that they (were supposed to ) finished at a similar time.

We made a couple of adjustments during the afternoon's racing,

  • The Hobie Waves were having a great time in the wind and wanted more ... so we added a second race of a single hotdog.
  • The MJ's decided after one work that a single hotdog would be more suitable.
  • and finally we shortened course for the NS fleet and cut off the last lap.

53 boats participated with the larger fleets being, almost 20 F11's, 10 Hobie Waves, and approx 20 boats across the Spiral, Laser Full and 4.7 fleet.

thankyou to everyone, organising committee, sailors and supporters for coming along, helping out and race management / support.
